Brief Blog exercise

David McCollum

My prospectus is about finding out whether or not ethanol is a viable alternative to gasoline for America. I have a general understanding about the pros and cons of using ethanol, but I need to find out a lot more specific information through my research. Areas I need to find specific information about include: other countries or instances where ethanol is being used, effects to the environment ethanol will have, economic effects that ethanol will have, and information specific to America with regards to using ethanol. I think the topic I am researching is not too broad or too narrow because there is a lot of information in favor of using ethanol and there is a lot of information saying that ethanol is not a good alternative. This topic covers politics, environmental issues, and economic issues. My end result to this research should give me a clear understanding as to whether or not using ethanol for fuel is a viable alternative for America.

David I really like your research topic. I think you are going to have a lot of success finding what you need, however you might find too much info. You might want to keep in mind that a lot of the info you're going to come across is biased, so just make sure the author is credible.

I would agree with george the information probably will be biased. Another question are you going to use environmental setbacks as negatives (i.e, farms for corn over used, farmers taking short cuts to get desired results) or economical setbacks (i.e, rising cost of corn, inflation because ethanol bought in the nation versus out of the nation).

The current question/topic might need some more work, ethanol production in the us consumes more energy than it produces, in its current state at least. Those have already been well documented, and pursuing it further would probably delve into the stakes people have, not so much about fuel but more of farm subsidies and such, while thats a perfectly good direction to head in. If you rather work on the energy future topic, you may want to go a step up from just corn and look at biofuel.
